2 ¼ c. flour
1 ½ t. baking powder
½ t. baking soda
½ t. cinnamon
½ t. nutmeg
¼ t. ground cloves
¼ t. salt
½ c. sugar
¼ c. brown sugar
2 eggs
2 T. oil
¼ c. milk
1 c. applesauce
½ t. vanilla
Fill large heavy skillet two thirds full with vegetable
oil. Heat to 360 degrees. Sift together dry ingredients. Beat together sugar, brown sugar, and eggs
in large bowl with electric mixer at medium speed until fluffy. Beat in the 2 tablespoons oil. Stir in dry ingredients, alternately with milk. Stir in applesauce and vanilla. Carefully drop batter by level
tablespoonfuls, 3 or 4 at a time into hot oil.
Do not overcrowd pan. Fry,
turning once with tongs, for 3 minutes or until golden. Drain on paper towels. Cool completely, sprinkle with powdered
sugar.
